Electronics Boutique debuts EBKids

WEST CHESTER, PA. -- Electronics Boutique is rolling out a new bricks-and-mortar retail format called EBKids, a child-friendly computer software and video game store.

The EBKids concept is a small-format, mall-based store currently being tested in only one location: the Garden State Plaza shopping center in Paramus, N.J. However, Electronics Boutique's president and ceo, Joseph Firestone, told analysts during a conference call last month that the initial sales results from the new retail format, which opened in September, have been very strong and that the company expects to open as many as 10 EBKids stores in fiscal 2001. However, he did not disclose where the new stores would be located.

Firestone described EBKids' merchandise selection as "violence-free" and "educational," and said response from mall developers has been strong.

"Electronics Boutique was the number one retailer on the release day of Sega's Dreamcast and had a 22% market share in the U.S. over the first three days of sales," Firestone said.(Continue Reading)
